It would be nice to have the possibility to mark fields not to show up to the user, but still have them set by the template.

For example:
We have a checkbox 'reported by customer' in our issues, it makes no sense to show that to the user when using the 'customer report' template, but nevertheless it should be set!

[I have created an issue for this, but thought maybe some of you would like to see that too and vote for it at https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/BON-1193]

Thomas this is possible with Bonfire 2.2.1 released this week as you can now select which fields are shown to users of a template. However, any default values you set in a template are still sent to JIRA regardless of whether you've elected to show or hide those fields to users of that template.

If you upgrade to 2.2, check the "reported by customer" checkbox in your "customer report" template AND uncheck the new show the "reported by customer" field checkbox - you should have what you're asking for.

More information on this feature is in the 2.2.1 release notes here: https://confluence.atlassian.com/display/BONFIRE/Bonfire+2.2.1+Release+Notes#Bonfire221ReleaseNotes-Fieldvisibilitycontrolfortemplates

OK, this looks good for optional fields, but there seems no way to hide a mandatory field and assign it a value via template...

That's correct. If a field is hidden and mandatory and has a default value that is not valid at the time of issue creation, then users will be unable to use that template completely. To prevent this blocking problem from occurring, we've made mandatory fields always visible for now.

Given your use case, I'm interested to know if hidden fields with default values remove your need to make certain fields mandatory. For example if the "reported by customer" checkbox was checked by default and hidden in the "customer report" template, would it matter if you made the "reported by customer" checkbox non-mandatory?

Sorry, actually I simplyfied our setup: we have custom field with two radiobuttons, one saying 'reported by customer', the other 'internal report' - this field has to be mandatory.
But for the 'customer report' teamplate I don't want to show this and set it right to 'reported by customer'
