Search to see if version contains particular text

Fix Version in JIRA does not support the contains operator. I would really like to find a way to search for versions that may contain or start with particular text.

Has anyone tackled this with a creative solution?

JQL Tricks plugin, a commercial one, has the versionMatches method where regular expression can be used to search.
