This week I have noticed that the search function within the backlog screen, to 'search backlog' is not working, it returns no results

It seems that search on the backlog became case sensitive. That should the problem. You need to contact the Atlassian support. Take a look to the same issue here https://community.atlassian.com/t5/Jira-questions/Has-backlog-search-become-case-sensitive/qaq-p/2027480
