Requirements Management and trace matrices using jira and confluence for Cloud

lavanyat September 3, 2015

We've currently switched to JIRA and Confluence on Cloud for tracking our issues and storing our project related documents. In the past we've been maintaining all the requirements on word documents and producing trace matrices on Excel spreadsheets.

Now that we've moved to JIRA from an opensource bug tracking system, we're looking to see if there is a better ways of tracking our requirements and producing trace matrices.

  • Can we manage our requirements and produce trace matrices using only JIRA and Confluence?
  • All our project documents are in Word, Can import our documents into Confluence and then break them down as individual requirements in Jira?
  • If out of the box JIRA and confluence will not meet our needs, are there any plugins for the cloud that would work for us?

Greatly appreciate any suggestions that you many have!

JIRA Agile add-on will provide you the hierarchy that you need for the High Level Requirements to Development tasks (Epic > Stories > Sub-Tasks). Take a look at that. The matrices are easily retrieved on JQL queries and built in charts. You can also use Confluence for Release Notes and displaying JIRA Issues included in a particular release (Take a look at how Atlassian displays their releases notes).
