Recommendation to the use of dependencies

Dependencies could be

- tasks blocked by, releases, teams and individual members

What gives the tool best flexibility to find a schedule, how does the tool rank the dependencies, and what does Atlassian recommend?

Could it be possible to lock down some parts of a plan a free up other for experimentation?

Too many dependencies and the tool naturally does a poor job in ordering tasks, but what is the right level?
