Project role by user

Is it possible to use the "Project Role" function to restrict access for a user to a project or project?  Removing checks from the various groups on the "Edit Project Role' page has no effect on that users access to a specific project.  Seems like a bug.

Thanks.  It seems like the 'Edit Project Role' page for user would provide the access granularity that we need by basically removing a user from a group (or all groups) for a particular project by unchecking the box.  Then when the 'View Project Role by User' page refreshed there would be red Xs rather than green checks but the action doesn't have that affect.

I found this -

but its not really the administration path I want to take.

JIRA works on a grand permission model. If someone is able to see or do something you don't want them to you need to find where they are being granted access. There are no "don't allow" flags. the closest is security schemes, but they still basically allow access to certain roles/groups and exclude all others.
