Portfolio: how to use story pointing at the epic and initiative level

Thuy Van Watts October 26, 2017

Being able to story point at the epic and initiative level is useful when you don't have all the tickets created yet.  So i'm confused at how the roll up happens when you do add stories w points to the epic.

Example:

i have an epic w high level estimate of 20pts.

i add a story that's 10pts <= the epic story pts changes to 10.

i change the epic story pts back to 20 by entering 10

i add another story that's 5pts <= the epic story pts changes to 25.

so it seems like, if there are any stories in the epic, it will sum the pts for all the stories.  and if you enter an additive amt, that will be added on top.

this sounds logical mathematically.    but it's not helping me w a real life example of: this epic is initially estimated 20 and should be 20 until 1) there's > 20 pts worth of stories in the epc, or 2) i change the epic estimate.

hopefully that makes sense.  this is also the case w initiatives.  help?

Hi Thuy! How are you doing?

When I first saw these fields in Portfolio I also thought it would "replace" the Epic estimate with the sum of my Stories. But in the end I found out it "sums" the Stories estimate with the Epic estimate.

I did not find anyway to change this behavior.

Hope this helps!
