Pop-up textmessage triggered by clickable button/link/icon

Hello, On Jira fields and custom fields there is the "help" option with the "?" symbol, like in this picture: helpicon.JPG . When I click on the "?" icon, I get a piece of helptext like this: helpicon with text.JPGThis "?" icon is directly related to a (custom) field. What I now need is the possibility to put a similar function to the edit screen of my project, but the text and the "?" are not related to a specific field, but related to the entire (edit) screen. Is this possible and how? Thank you for the help and advice.

Hi @Sandra Meessen,

I don't think it's possible with standard Jira settings, but I have an idea for you:

There's an add-on (for both Jira Cloud and Jira Server) called the "Jira Toolkit Plugin" that provides two very helpful field types called "Message Custom Field (for view)" and "Message Custom Field (for edit)." These fields allow you to display text or HTML on your issue or workflow transition screens. They particularity help to provide additional instruction, display a warning, or link to additional information.

To place a message on a view screen, use the "Message Custom Field (for view)" field type. To place a message on a create, edit, or transition screen, use the "Message Custom Field (for edit)" field type.

This is my favorite custom field and the one I use the most.  When users need help providing the right information on an edit screen, I simply add the field to the top of the screen, and provide instructions or link to a Confluence page with instructions.

Note:  This plugin may already be installed in your Jira Cloud instance. You may need to enable it.  For Jira Server, you'll need to install it.

Hope this helps,

Hello Rachel,

Thank you for your help, this will work. Two questions on formatting of my text in the message custom field:

1. Can I use renderer on this type of custom field? How?

2. HTML is disabled in our Jira.  What other options for formatting text in this message custom field can I use? Coloring? Text size? New line?

Thank you and kind regards.

hello @Rachel Wright Is this plugin free?

Hi @Priyanka khare ,

Yes, it is currently listed as free for Jira Server in the Atlassian Marketplace.  See:

For Jira Cloud, it's already built-in.

No idea what/if there are plans for Jira Data Center. You could try asking Atlassian at: or via a support ticket.

Have a good day!

Hi again @Sandra Meessen,

There's no such renderer for a custom field of this type.  Simply add your content to the "Default Value" attribute of the field.

For formatting, you can use Wiki markup in Jira Cloud.  (You can only use HTML in Jira Server.)  For the list of markup tags, go to:

If this answers your question, please "accept" the answer by clicking the "check mark" next to the "vote" icon on the top left of the "answers" section.

Have a lovely day!
