Performance when sending notifications to more watchers?

Robert Poldervaart September 18, 2012

Hi,

We currently send notifications to Reporter, Assignee, and Watchers, with typically 0-2 watchers. We are considering using the script runner plug-in and the add to watcher listener to add the reporter, commenter, and a few other workflow users to the watchers list, and then changing the notification scheme to send notifications to the assignee and watchers (not the reporter since the reporter will be in the watchers list). The end result will be that a few more people might be getting notifications, and thus JIRA sending a lot more email notifications based on an average of 3-10 JIRA issues updated per minute in our company.

Do you know if there are any performance issues with JIRA sending notifications to a large number of email recipients? We have about 120,000 issues, and like I said maybe 3-10 issues getting updated per minute.

Thanks,

Robert

Hello Robert,

It will depend on how are your current memory settings. If you're already running JIRA with the minimal recommended settings, then it can cause some performance problems. However, if the resources available for JIRA are recommended, I don't believe that it will cause issues for you.

The better way to determine it is upon checking your JVM memory settings, as well with the server specs. Could you please post it to let us review and provide suggestions, if needed?

Thanks!
