Only allow epics within a project to be epic-linked.

Dennis Dolman December 19, 2019

Hi,

Is it possible to disable epic linking to different projects? Currently it is possible to create a Story in project A and link it to a Epic in project B. Is there a way make sure that a new issue is only linkable to a epic within that project?

Thanks!

Hi @Dennis Dolman ,

I am not able to find a setting that will allow you to limit the issues that can link to an Epic.  By design in Jira, Epics can span projects to allow cross-project dependencies to be created and managed in a common board; since boards are based on filters this allows the project lead to create Kanban and Scrum boards that manage larger chunks of work across projects.

Hi @Scott Theus , Thanks for you answer.

Unfortunately, that's a bit of a issue. Sometimes, people assign the ticket to the wrong epic (per accident). This results in the issue appearing in someone elses board/backlog.

Is there any other way to prevent this?

There isn’t any way to prevent it through software, this sounds like it needs a human process fix; perhaps you can put a standard naming convention in place for epics? If the name starts with the project key it may help people identify the correct epic.
