We have a backlog of about 100 issues and want to move ~40 of them into the coming sprint.

One way to do that is to edit every single issue and assign a sprint, which is too cumbersome.

The other way is to drag and drop the issue from the backlog list up to the sprint, which means scrolling for 10s of seconds during dragging until we scrolled far enough up to see the sprint. Yes, selecting multiple of them is possible with Shift+Click and Ctrl+Click, but if you once click wrong, the selection is gone.

So, is there an easy way to move issues from a large backlog into a sprint without spending more time scrolling then planning?

You can actually right-click on the issues and have a "Send to Sprint XXX" as first menu item!
This is what I wanted.

Another solution is to move the issues to the top of the backlog and then drag the bottom sprint bar down to include the issues.

Just an add-on to your point,

1. Select multiple issues by Shift+Click,

2. Right click and choose "Send to Sprint XXX"

One way for this scenario. Why not you do a bulk edit of the issues and add the sprint value instead of editing each issue one by one. This will be more comfortable. Just create a filter, search for the issues that need to be added to the sprint and perform a bulk edit on them an add the Sprint value.

We can't simply search for the issues because we're planning, and deciding which issues are going to be included and which not.
