Yes, it is possible and simple .

  • when JIRA is running, take a xml backup
  • shutdown JIRA and take a backup of the database and the attachements and any customized templates if any
  • Download JIRA on Linux and install, configure the database setttings and the JIRA home directory.
  • Replace the attachments directory from the old setup to the new setup.
  • Then start importing the xml file

Note that there are two things here - if you have the database running separately, you don't have to do the whole xml thing, you can just move the server element and connect the new server to the existing database.  (Still back it up with the database tools, just in case the new server isn't quite right)

So would it just be a matter of express installing JIRA on our new linux machine and then having it point to our external DB? would we still need to change the home folder and or attachments?

You will need to change the home folder, but only because the two OSs have different ways of handling paths.

The attachments can be copied directly, the directory names and structure is the same and a system-to-system copy will handle the directory type translation automatically.

XML backup is indeed the database backup. But I suggest an xml backup and proprietary database backup as well.

Note: Make sure you keep the backup safe till the new setup is completed and tested.
