Making 'Resolution' Field Optional

I have added the 'Resolution' field to my Update screen, but every time someone updates an issue, it changes the Resolution to the default (which is inconveniently 'Fixed' at the moment). Is there any way to make the Resolution field optional? I did not see anything in the system settings or Field Configurations. Thank you!

Basically never put it on any screen except the transition screen where you are setting it.
