Jira was locked

Alex Plotkin October 31, 2012

I moved the evaluation 5.1.1 version of Jira to the 2012 Windows server from the original machine and started Jira as application - it failed. I looked at the atlassian-jira.log and found the record below:

2012-10-31 21:16:20,875 main FATAL atlassian.jira.startup.JiraStartupLogger Startup check failed. JIRA will be locked.

The search did not find no *lock* file under Jira home directory.

I tried to start Jira on the original system – same result.

Goal

1. Move Jira onto 2012 Windows server and keep its configuration.

2. Export Jira’s data from default db to SQL Server 2012.

It's telling you exactly what the problem is at the bottom of that log - you have not configured it correctly.

I suspect you've tried to copy/move the application directory on to the new server. You can make that work, but frankly, don't bother, because it's a heck of a lot of mostly pointless, dull and error-prone slog work. You should really install a new system from scratch, get it working (with an empty database) and then point it at the old database.

As Nic said, the problem is that you've not configured the JIRA HOME Directory. To configure it, you'll simply need to use the Configuration Tool inside your JIRA_Install/bin folder (see Configuring the JIRA Home Directory).

However, if you are planning on moving JIRA from one server to the other, I'd advise you to follow the Migrating JIRA to Another Server documentation rather then simply copying the folders from one server to the other.

Yup, I've seen flat server to server copies a few times. Never seen one work well, except when the servers were identical in terms of software (identical OS, disks, directory structure, versions of software - only the hardware changed). I wouldn't even think of a simple copy across Windows versions - always install clean on that, because it's a dreadfully designed OS that makes dumb, undocumented and unpredictable changes.

Thank you for the notes. I did exactly as Nick said, installed a new app, tested startup and replaced the default db with mine. And it worked.
