Hi,
We are a small business owners and work on multiple projects (online apps). Most of my work is done by freelancers or temporary staff so only i am responsible for all the stuff. I don't think i will have more than 5 users for now.
What i want to do :
- Online tool to manage the projects
- Keep track for the tasks and components that i want to design on each project and check the progress on this
- Keep track on the issues found on each application so that we can work on them and release it once tested
- Document some learning and other information required for projects
- Code repository
I was looking at all of this and finally landed on atlassian products (https://www.atlassian.com/how-it-works). While this seems to be the best fit, i wanted to know if you really think i am on right path
Since i might not be going to the hosted version and will be going for self hosted option, I wanted to know if you have any document on how to set this up in a shared hosting environment. I have account with Bluehost so thats going to be my first chioce.
Please advice if all that i am thinking is possible and if anyone have done this.
Thanks,
Gautam
Hi Gautam,
I think it would be cheaper in the end if you just went for the On Demand starter license than hosting it yourself on something like Bluehost. Especially because Atlassian will do all updates, set-up and maintance themselves (so no extra work for you).
If you want to install it on a Bluehost you'll need to do it as if you would install it on a server you hosted yourself, take a look at the installation instructions for Jira for example : https://confluence.atlassian.com/display/JIRA/JIRA+Installation+and+Upgrade+Guide
Please keep in mind that you'll need certain admin rights on the server and database to execute the installation.
My advice : start using the On Demand Starter version.
Best regards,
Peter
I'd agree with Peter. In my experience, most hosting services don't quite have an ideal model for installing Atlassian products on them, and people are generally better off hosting it themselves (with full access and control over the environment) or getting someone who specialises in Atlassian hosting. OnDemand is of course one of these specialists, although there are Expert providers who will do something similar (and not limit your options on plugins, and only upgrade when you're ready etc)
Sounds like you should go for OnDemand to me though. At least to start with.

Hi Nic and Peter,
I did a little reading on this and I agree to your views. I think hosting would be a better option than doing this myself.
Thanks,
Gautam
