Jira and Confluence are not starting

Both our JIRA and Confluence installations are not starting this morning.

The only error we get is:

The service is not responding to the control function.

More help is available by typing NET HELPMSG 2186.

Any ideas how to get my installation running again?

Check the permissions on the directories the servers are installed in.
