Hi Team,

I heard that On-Premise Jira is migrating to Jira Cloud. If this is true, how long will it take to complete the migration? Are there any precautionary steps we need to take from our side?

We want to integrate Zendesk with Jira. Which Jira platform should we integrate with, Jira On-Premise, or Jira Cloud? If possible can you please share the documentation?

Thanks and Regards,
Rajesh S

Hi @Rajesh Sailada ,

Thanks for posting your question here.

I am Dhiren, one of the Solutions Engineers working at Exalate.

To sync Jira issues with Zendesk I would recommend you to try out our completely decentralized and bi-directional integration solution Exalate.

Not only you can sync just issues (including system and custom fields) from a Jira Software/Jira Service Management instance, but also any information using REST API's with our Groovy based scripting interface offering limitless customizations!

We do offer a 30 day free trial incase you want to evaluate the solution!

Thanks, Dhiren

Welcome to the community @Rajesh Sailada

The duration of the migration really depends on several factors:

  • How many server projects do you currently have
  • How many issues do you have
  • What is the size of attachments of those issues
  • Error fixing that will occur during the pre-migration phase - this is what Jira Cloud Migration assistant does before the migration itself
  • If you opt yourself for the backup option that is another work plus
  • If you delete the deactivated users (since these users get migrated as well), this can take some time as well, time consuming wise

From my experience, the shortest migration of three projects took about 2 hours with no additional modifications.

@Rajesh Sailada hi. I see a lot of propositions that can help resolve your case, so i'll just add another solution to the list: ZigiOps from the Atlassian marketplace. It's easy to scale and customize as per your needs. It works fast and safe (no data storage) , and it's perfect for migrations too. It will help you connect/integrate Jira &Zendesk and transfer the data you want. Check it out and even give it a try via the Free Trial.

Hi @Rajesh Sailada

As mentioned by others, Atlassian has ended support for Jira Server in the mid of February 2024. We assume by On-premise Jira, you mean Jira Data Center. You may refer to an article on Atlassian community that walks through the key considerations before migrating to Jira Data Jira Cloud, benefits of migration, getting started and choosing the right migration approach for successful migration in detail:

  • Benefits: Improved ROI, compliance, scalability, and access to latest features.
  • Getting Started: Assess your readiness by considering downtime, security, user training, and integration with other systems.
  • Preparing to Move: Back up your data, review user permissions, clean up unnecessary data, and assess compatibility of your current tools.
  • Choosing a Migration Approach: Jira Cloud Migration Assistant (JCMA) for simple migrations, manual migration for small instances with experienced teams, or third-party migration tools for complex projects.
  • Post-Migration Analysis: Monitor performance, optimize workflows, maintain security, and seek feedback for improvement.

For Zendesk- Jira integration, you can sync Zendesk either with Jira Datacenter or Jira Cloud depending on your plan of migration. Broadly, there are two approaches:

  • Zendesk native integration tool: It can be used for small-scale organizations as it can link only 200 tickets to Jira issues.
  • Enterprise - sync tool: For a richer integration experience like syncing 200+ Zendesk ticket links, user mentions, embedded images, retaining formatting, and a reliable bi-directional sync with conflict resolution, you may consider enterprise sync tools.

OpsHub, the Atlassian and Zendesk partner, offers an integration platform that can help ease your migration and integration journey with a user friendly, no script configuration, no plugins, rich data sync including rich text format retention and automatic conflict resolution.

Feel free to reach out to our solutions architects for an initial free consultation on your migration and integration planning.

Thanks,

Hi @Rajesh Sailada

Atlassian's Server products are EOL - but you can either...

  • Migrate to Cloud, or...
  • Upgrade to Data Center (which is still on-premise)

You can compare the two on this page: https://www.atlassian.com/migration/assess/compare-cloud-data-center

---

It's hard to say how long a migration would take - it depends on multiple factors such as the size of your instance, the number of users, and the apps you have installed.

But to get started, I'd check out the migration paths and information pages available through here: https://www.atlassian.com/migration

---

For Jira <> Zendesk, there's solutions for both Cloud and Data Center, so I wouldn't make this a deciding factor unless there's a specific app or middleware you must use for this.

You can check out some options for this integration on the Marketplace, check this search list: https://marketplace.atlassian.com/search?query=zendesk

---

Hope this helps!

Thanks @Ste Wright
Do we have an ETA  for the end-of-life of Atlassian's Jira On-premises?

Hi @Rajesh Sailada

The Server product suite is end-of-life - that happened in mid-February 2024.

There are no known plans to retire Data Center - it is one of the core products Atlassian offers, alongside Cloud (SaaS).
