Jira Issues XLS export is not compatible with non-Excel spreadsheets

Hunter Blanks November 14, 2013

I am unable to export Jira issues into any format I can easily use.

In particular, an XLS file exported from one of my saved filters (10300, with "Current Fields") uses an HTML format file instead of the typical XLS format. I imagine some versions of Office support such a thing, but Numbers, even the most recent version, certainly doesn't.

Can you all please fix this? Or better yet just support CSV export? (See https://answers.atlassian.com/questions/84144/how-to-export-issues-as-a-csv-file#fmanswer) I don't think it's a lot to ask that we should be able to import our issues data into things other than Excel.

JIRA's XLS export is really not XLS. It is HTML renamed as XLS. There are still some pending requests for that feature - https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JRA-27567 and https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JRA-32352

Use the Better Excel Plugin for JIRA to export real Excel spreadsheets (in XLSX format) from JIRA.

It produces files in Excel's native file format (that can also be imported to Open Office or Google Spreadsheets), allows using Excel formulas and functions, Excel pivot tables and more.

See the comparison why it makes a difference (there is a lot!) or read the user docs.
