JIRA rank functionality

We have a project that uses both a SCRUM board and a Kanban board. The SCRUM board shows all of the Stories in a sprint in the same order that they are listed when looking at the sprint from the backlog - high priority Stories at the top, lower priority Stories at the bottom. When looking at the Kanban board, there are several stories showing at the top of the Kanban board that are actually in the backlog (not in any sprint). I would think that a Story in a sprint would have a higher rank that a Story that is in the backlog.

Is ranking only set when Stories are in the backlog? If you pull a Story from the bottom of your backlog and add it to a sprint, shouldn't the rank be updated so it is higher than the remainder of the backlog? If the Kanban board filter uses the Order by Rank, wouldn't Stories in a sprint be displayed on the board above Stories that are not in a sprint?

The scrum board is actually being displayed by Sprint->Rank; whereas the Kanban is only using rank.

Your backlog will rank issues that are ONLY in the backlog.  Each future sprint will only rank issues within that sprint.  So, a Kanban board disregards whether the issue is in a sprint or not, therefore the ranking will most likely be different.
