JIRA Tool Integration with QC

Kalpana Pugazhendi March 16, 2017

Hello,

Can anyone help me with integrating/ sync JIRA Tool with Quality Center (QC) Tool. We are currently using QC Tool for tracking the test cases.

Ex: In Rally Tool, we have a space for creating, executing and maintaining the Test cases and results for a particular Issue. In JIRA, we dont have one such space. Or is there a way to integrate the QC Tool to JIRA. Thanks in advance!

Hi @Kalpana Pugazhendi,

Depending on your requirements, there are two options that you can evaluate to create a Test workspace in Jira:

  1.  Custom issue types: Set up custom issue types in Jira for maintaining Test data like Test sets, Test cases, Test results, etc. With this option, you will have to see if you can configure all test-based reports, a field for holding test steps, and test configurations, as required.
  2. Atlassian Jira add-ons: Several Jira add-ons are available that create Test space inside Jira, providing common test issue types and functionalities like test steps, ability to execute tests, test folders, etc.

Once you have decided on the approach, the following points should be considered before undertaking the QC - Jira integration:

  1. Support for QC Test data: Opt for the solution that can integrate all the Test data like Test Cases, Test Sets, Test Configurations, Test Results, Test Folders, etc., that you are looking to integrate.
  2. Support for Jira add-on you select: If you go to an add-on in Jira to store Tests, ensure the tool supports the add-on. Often the add-ons use different integration APIs than Jira standard APIs
  3. Test hierarchy preservation: QC allows you to store Test data in the hierarchy using Test Sets and Test Folders. Opt for a solution that can retain the same hierarchy in Jira.
  4. Test Step Result preservation: QC allows specifying results at the Test Step level, highlighting the steps that passed and the failed steps. As part of the validation, you will have to validate if Test Step Results are also integrated into Jira or not.
  5. Format retention: QC and Jira use different rich text formatting standards which are similar but not equivalent. QC uses HTML text formatting, while Jira uses Wiki markup text formatting. As part of the evaluation phase, you will have to validate such format transformation strategies [i.e., how to convert HTML format to the wiki for the data being migrated]

The following Approaches can be used for integrating Tests between QC and Jira:

  • Free Sync Tools: There are few free tools available in the market that can take care of integration needs for basic issue types. As part of the evaluation, validate if they support the integration of Test data between QC and Jira
  • OpsHub [Community Edition and Commercial Edition]: OpsHub, an Atlassian partner, has rich experience in undertaking integration for Test data between QC and Jira. There is a Community Edition available that integrates Defect and Requirement between QC and Jira. The Commercial Edition additionally supports integrating test artifacts. For Test integration, we are happy to help you with your integration planning process.

Also, take a look at ConnectAll. We integrate QC with JIRA, Rally etc. Worth evaluating.

Hi Kalpana,

There are different solutions to synchronize JIRA issues with QC Defects.

We are the team behind Exalate (which is one of these commercial solutions).  It allows to synchronise HPQC Defects with JIRA issues bidirectionally.
