JIRA DB UTF-8 required? Will UTF-16 also work?

Divyakiran Singhvi August 18, 2015

Atlassian's Oracle recommendation encoding for JIRA is AL32UTF8 (UTF-8). We wanted to re-use an already existing DB Instance and its encoding is AL16UTF16. Should this cause any issues with the backup/restore or impact any other features?

This is going to be our Test Instance Only, however the projects will be migrated to PROD from this Instance at a later point of time. Wouldn't want to run into issues with Backup/Restore at that point?

Hello Divyakiran

Please note that we should respect what is described on our our Supported Platforms page and also respect the database collation in order to guarantee stability to your JIRA instance. I'd recommend to open a request to your DBA to create/change the database collation to the correct one. Using a wrong collation may cause problems with the ranking system in JIRA Agile.

Cheers

Yup. Keeping in mind the stability of the JIRA instance. I've already requested our DBA to change the encoding. Thank you.

Hi Divyakiran,

It will probably work but with some colateral effects maybe, check out this bug reported:

https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/CONF-35907

We suggest to try at a test instance and see how it goes.

Cheers
