JIRA/Confluence Install Best Practice

Since the server for the JIRA Software, JIRA ServiceDesk, and Confluence software is large enough to support VMs, the plan is to create multiple VMs.  One thing I haven't been able to find is what is best practice.  Should JIRA Software and JIRA ServiceDesk be on one VM and Confluence on a different VM, or should they all be on the same VM?  Does it depend on the user license size?  A method of determining which would be best under various situations would be appreciated.

Even when you install JIRA and Confluence on the same server, they remain separate applications.

The only consideration about using them on the same server is resource contention.  If JIRA starts hogging the CPU or IO, that could affect Confluence, and vice-versa.  And of course, a single server is going to need to be able to resource them both.  That's about it really.

Service Desk and Software are applications that run inside a JIRA instance, so they would all be in one server
