It's possible to have more than one version fields in a project

Óscar Mestre September 30, 2024

Hi! :)

I have a board where I manage 8 applications, labeling each task with the name of the app.

I'm interested in using the version function of Jira, but I have a doubt about whether I can make sure that the version function is separated for each app. This is because my apps use a numbering system of x.x.x (for example, version 3.0.1), and each one has its own version number. Eventually, they might clash because one app might have version 3.0.1 in September, and in December, another one might launch the same version number, 3.0.1, so I won't be able to distinguish between versions by app.

Has anyone dealt with this situation or knows how to manage multiple version numbers?

Hi Oscar,

You should be able to use both letters and numbers in your version names in Jira.

You could either include the app name, or an abbreviated version of it, in the name to distinguish between versions.

e.g.

  • Oscars App 1.2.0
  • OA 1.2.0

Additionally, when you are creating releases/ versions in Jira, you set the dates for when you plan to work on, and release the version. Once the version is complete, you mark it as "Released".

Hope this is helpful!

Note: This is assuming you are creating tasks for the different apps in the same Jira project

Okay, but in case you use one task for several apps because they are related, you won’t be able to link it to different versions, right?

My initial assumption was no, however, I just tried it out in my Test Project and it seemed to work.

Alternative Option - Components

That being said, depending on your use case, you might find it beneficial to use Jira Components to denote the different apps instead.

"Jira components help you group issues in your project around product features, departments, or workstreams. You can assign component owners, and auto-assign people to issues linked to those components."

More on components: https://support.atlassian.com/jira-software-cloud/docs/group-and-track-work-with-components/

Test Project

I would highly recommend creating a secondary Test Project where you can play around a bit and trial different settings. Or if you have a Premium plan, you should have access to a sandbox.

Good luck!

Hi Teale,
I have JIRA Standart but I will try both Components, we are starting with it. And link some version to one task and view.
Thanks for your help! :)

Hi @Óscar Mestre Welcome to the community!

You cannot create versions additional version function at project level. You will need some naming conventions if you would like to identify them or have separate projects for each app that you develop.

From within issues, you can create a version picker custom field to help with your needs. But please be aware that if you use these custom fields, you need to configure custom reporting to show the progress of issues.

Hope this helps!

Hi @Anandhi Arumugam _Cprime_ ,
If I use a naming convention for distinguish the Apps but I have one task related to many apps because it's a change needed in some of them. I will be able to link to link to the different versions or only one?

@Óscar Mestre You will be able to choose as many versions as you want in the Affects version/s and Fix version/s field since they are multi-picker type fields. The system will let you choose the relevant versions that you have within the project.
