Is there any way to have Versions link to custom fields of type version?

We have a third custom field of type version that is called "Target Version/s" that we use to indicate which features are intended for a given release. However, in the list of releases this field is not being picked up in the progress column which limits it's use.

Is there any way to fix this? Using "Fix versions" for both bugs and features isn't quite ideal, not to mention that a new feature isn't exactly a "fix". I'm fairly surprised that version typed fields are not automatically linked.

In that case I would consider creating dedicated Release board with custom JQL which would query your Target Version(s) custom field accross all projects. This way you could get list of versions incl. issues displayed on this Board. 

You could also consider using Dasboard gadget possibly Calendar where you would display the dates of Target Releases
