Is there any limitation for number of characters used for custom field name?

Is there any limitation for number of characters used for custom field name, such as a custom field name must be less than 50 characters?

Please advise.

Answer accepted

Yes, 256 characters.

But longer ones anyway will mess up the screens and display.
