Is there a way to number sub-tasks so that they relate back to the issue they support?

Currently both issues (stories) and sub-tasks auto generate a number when created - I am wondering if there is a way to have the sub-tasks generate a sub number to the story.   (e.g. Story is HRBAT-154  and has 3 subtasks - could they be HRBAT -154.1, HRBAT - 154.2, and HRBAT -154.3

My users are looking for an easier way to recognize a subtask as related to an issue.

No.  Subtasks remain issues in their own right and follow the same key rule as all other issues.  You would need to rewrite Jira and all its add-ons to change this.

Their parent is indicated in some places in the UI, although not quite enough in my opinion.
