Is there a way to have a sub task show not only the parent issue but also the parent issues epic (in the sprint)?

Seth,  If you have access to the ScriptRunner for JIRA add-on, you can use a scripted custom field to return the name of the Epic associated with an issue regardless of whether that issue is a regular issue or a sub-task. See our Solutions Guide article on Rolling Up Epic Time Estimates for how to do that. 

The article is written for users of our Dataplane Reporting for JIRA add-on, but is not dependent on your using that.
