Is there a field to indicate Business worktype in Jira?

Ann Rumenapp December 13, 2021

We use the component field already for other purposes, but need a field to indicate what business objective category (User Experience, Customer Experience, Continuous Improvement, Business, Technology) the work is for.

We don't want to use a custom field, is there another option?

@Ann Rumenapp

You could use issue type.  If you are using a software project you could use epics to organize them that way.  You can also use the component field since you can apply multiple components.

Today we use issue type to indicate story, task, sub-task, bug, etc.  We want to categorize these into the business objective categories.  Basically linking the detail issues to which project business objective is being met at the strategic level.

Is there a way to customize the issue types?  So that a risk, issue, or story can also indicate that it is a User Experience Issue or Process Improvement story?

@Ann Rumenapp If you do not want to use a custom field, components or issue type you can always group and organize by epic.

Here are a couple of helpful links.

yes, we use epics for the solution delivery feature.  The field we are looking for is something that would tie to the Project Charter objective.

It seems a custom field is the only other alternative at this point.  Thank you for the ideas!

you could use Labels. not great but an option.

We use labels to indicate which team on the project is doing the work and don't want to confuse people by using label for multiple purposes.
