Is it possible to synchronize two Jira instances?

Flavio Beck February 12, 2014

I have a Jira server in my country, but around 500 users may start accessing it from another country.

The server is OK, but the VPN bandwidth between countries is not enough. (please do not ask me to increase BW).

During tests we see the connection has a poor performance and Jira takes too time to load pages.

(user experience is not good)

I have read about Jira client and I intend to start more tests soon.

In the other hand, I would like to know if its possible to install another instance of Jira and keep all data synchronized (database and jira_home)

Option 1: shared database and sync jira_home

Option 2: sync database and sync jira_home

Note, it is bi-directional. Both countries may update issues.

THanks

Hi Flavio,

just have a look at:
https://marketplace.atlassian.com/plugins/com.intenso.jira.plugins.synchronizer

The idea is that particular issue types in particular project are synchronized with second JIRA project+issue type pair - that's something what we call Contract.

That's the base and next steps depend on needs. You can decide what will be:

  • direction of synchronization (JIRA 1 -> JIRA 2, JIRA 2 -> JIRA 1, both)
  • what will be synchronized (creates only, creates and updates, any other events configuration)
  • what field will be synchronized/mapped
  • if there should be a field with reference to second issue
  • if synchronize comments
  • if synchronize attachments
and you can configure that separately for each JIRA

It's not synchronizing jira_home but i think that it could be achieved by using:
https://marketplace.atlassian.com/plugins/com.botronsoft.jira.configurationmanager.

This is a common use case for synchronization.

You'll be able to synchronize any issue data of the other country over to your instance.

This will happen in real-time. That way, you'll always be in the loop on progress status, comments, attachments and even work-logs or change history.

You'll be able to easily customize exactly what you'd like to sync and who you'd like to sync it with.

Like the following example. We used the Exalate Issue Sync app to do this.

We are the developers of the app. So let us know if you need any help setting it up.

If you want, I can show you exactly how it would work for your use case through a one-on-one demo. You can book one here: Book A Demo.

Hi Flavio,

Another solution you might take into consideration is Backbone Issue Sync for JIRA. You could simply set up a second JIRA server in the other country, and use Backbone to keep the two JIRA instances in sync.

When setting up the synchronization with Backbone, you have full control on which issue types and fields you want to keep in sync, but can also control to sync comments and attachments.

Backbone is available via the Atlassian Marketplace, so of course you can download a free 30-day trial license and install it on a test system to check if it meets your requirements.
If there are any questions, feel free to reach out to us. We're always happy to help.

Cheers,
Nils

Hi Flavio,

As of now discussed many times on sync, sharing you some links may be helpful for you

https://confluence.atlassian.com/display/ATLAS/Federating+JIRA+-+Managing+Multiple+Instances

https://thepluginpeople.atlassian.net/wiki/display/JSA/Sync+Agent+for+JIRA

or

You can write your own custom plugins with the help of JRJC.

Cheers

Yes... I found more information here:

https://answers.atlassian.com/questions/96547/two-way-jira-mirror

https://answers.atlassian.com/questions/96399/how-to-sync-two-different-jira-instance

It seems, it is not possible to mirror instances in a simple way.

also, there is another aplication to help:

http://www.go2group.com/products/go2group-connectall/

But since I am just looking for a performance step, maybe these solution do no have a good cost/gain for me.

Have a look at https://github.com/rfordinal/jira-sync

This is a simple tool to synchronize two JIRA instances between vendor JIRA (ServiceDesk) and customer JIRA (Core/Software). Customer no longer needs to access JIRA ServiceDesk via web, just manages issues in own JIRA and assings to vendor.

Hi Francis,

No, I have not implemented a solution for that situation, but remote users are still accessing JIRA from overseas locations.

Nowadays the slowness caused by bandwidth seems to be resolved and the usage is acceptable.

anyway, the suggested addon should be a good solution:
