Incoming Mail Jira-core and jira-servicedesk

Hi all.

I have a fresh install of Jira-core and Jira-service desk and would like some advice on the best way to handle incoming mail.

I've configured servicedesk to create tickets from incoming mail sent to a gmail account and this is working.  I'd like for jira-core users to be able to reply to issue notifications and have those replies show up as comments.  Right now this is also working.

I'm a little confused because the documentation says I need to set up an incoming mail server and mail handlers for jira-core in order to process email replies.

Am I missing something? Why are replies being processed even though I have not configured an incoming server or any mail handlers?
