Doh! turns out mysql's (from apt-get on ubuntu) default character set was latin not utf8?? and certain foreign chars from github messages were causing it to fail. fix was to recreate db from mysql:

drop database jira;

create database jira default character set utf8 default collate utf8_unicode_ci;

ps. another snippet from the log

Caused by: java.sql.SQLException: Incorrect string value: '\xC4\x9Flaya...' for column 'MESSAGE' at row 1
