I want to create a chart that shows total time spent for a task.

Jyoti Singh November 20, 2024

Hi Everyone,

I create a release testing task for my team every sprint to keep a track of total time spent during release testing. Example to run all our manual smoke tests in prod env it takes upto 45 mins most of the times but in some cases it may be less or more. i want to create a graph to show the trend around "Total Time Spent" value.

how can i do this?

hi @Jyoti Singh

Welcome to the community !!

You can use Jira Rest API's to pull this information and create your own custom solution. Or as an alternate, you may want to try out a mktplace app for time tracking. If your team members are logging time spent against issues then the below app can help to track.

Worklogs Time Tracking & Timesheets

With this add-on, you can easily view time entries for multiple issues day wise grouped by in a single view. The app allows to filter/Categorize/Group your worklogs data and a timesheet view too to track individual time spent. And what's more it can be easily added as a dashboard gadget.

Or if you want to track time spent against each issue status in the workflow, you can try out

Time in Status Reports

The app allows to group your statuses and define your own cycle time / resolution. Also with this app you generate time in status for multiple issues with multiple filter and grouping options. This app also can easily be added as a dashboard gadget.

More details here.

Hi @Jyoti Singh ,

In the activity section of the issue view of each corresponding issue, there is a worklog tab. From here, you can view all worklogs recorded for the related issue or you can use jira's built-in workload pie chart for a quick oveview.

If you require a more detailed view and want to see the total time spent on all issues in various chart formats, there are several plugins available in the Atlassian Marketplace that offer advanced time tracking and reporting features. One of these options is WorklogPRO - Timesheets for Jira. I work for the vendor who developed this app.

With WorklogPro's Pivot Report feature, you can create a filter that includes the task issues created for the sprint, and then select this filter in the pivot report to view the total time spent on the relevant issues in various chart types (such as column, bar, line, etc.).

Hi @Jyoti Singh ,

Unfortunately, for the graph with this custom approach, you will have to use 3rd party applications. Native JIRA doesn't have this functionality. I recommend the one I have developed - Multi-team Scrum Metrics & Retrospective. It covers your request via custom JQL. For this, you need to find some indetificator for filter out these issues. It can be a separate issue type, a tag in a summary, or something else.

As you can see, on the graph you can display several teams. Also, you can show the metrics not only for sprints, but also for months, quarters, half-years and years. The app has a lot of features and is very adjustable.

Please let me know here if you need help with the setup.

Best regards,
Alexey

Hello @Jyoti Singh ,

Welcome to Atlassian Community!

If you don't mind getting an app from the Atlassian Marketplace, then I would recommend our app called Worklogs - Time Tracking and Time Reports, which was developed by SolDevelo, the company I represent.

In the app you can display various data like projects, users, logged time, original estimates, different sprints etc. There are many possibilities how you can filter the report and what’s the best is that we constantly improve our app.

In terms of your requirement in terms of showing the trends based on the total time spent, you can filter the worklogs per your requirements and then view the total time spent by other users in a form of the report, pie chart and bar chart.

It's also worth adding that the app uses Jira's native time tracking and time logs, meaning that any time tracked previously with this method before its installation will be present in Worklogs.

I hope that you will like it! Currently, Worklogs app is a bestseller in the Atlassian Marketplace when it comes to the time tracking apps.

You can book a demo with one of our experts and we will showcase the app and answer any questions you might have, or you can contact us through the portal here.

Hi @Jyoti Singh,

I'm afraid that this is not possible to do with Jira's native reports or gadgets.

My advice is to search on Atlassian Marketplace for a plugin that offers a report or dashboard gadget that supports this type of calculations.

If you consider the idea of using a plugin, our Great Gadgets app offers a Pivot Table & Pivot Chart gadget that can easily sum-up the time logged on your testing tasks from sprints and displays it in form of a table or chart.

To achieve this, the gadget should be configured like this:

Hi @Jyoti Singh ,

To track the total time spent during release testing, the Time Tracking Report in Jira can help you keep an eye on tracked time at the issue level.

However, if you’re after something more user-friendly and visually appealing, third-party add-ons can take Jira’s time tracking to the next level.

For instance, tools like Planyway make it easy to generate clear, detailed reports on team performance, giving you a simple yet powerful view of how much time is spent on each task or project over any given period. Build reports in Jira.png

Hello @Jyoti Singh ,

Welcome to the community. Out of the box, it is a little tricky using custom fields. I would encourage you to explore the market place apps.
