How to keep estimate changes in sync between JIRA and Portfolio?

LindaS November 23, 2015

If an estimate change is made in Portfolio to a JIRA issue, it doesn't appear to be applied to the same issue in JIRA (and vice versa). Please advise.

Hi Linda, in the plan configuration options (Plan > Configure > Synchronization Settings) there is an option to turn auto-sync on or off for estimates. The sync is 1:1 in case of story points. In case of time-based estimates, changes to the original estimate in JIRA are synced back to Portfolio with this option (and vice-versa). However, changes to remaining estimate in JIRA (e.g. because someone makes progress on the issue or logs time which reduces the remaining estimate) are not automatically synced back. The reason for this is that it would constantly, implicitly reduce the remaining effort to be scheduled, which would distort the plan if not updating the plans' start date as well. Therefore, for this case the recommendation is to run an explicit plan update regularly (e.g. after every sprint, or weekly depening on the teams' process), via Plan > Update from date. this will adapt the remaining estimates and set a new start date for the plan.

Summarizing:

  • Sync Settings / Auto-sync keeps values in sync during the actual estimation phase, focusing on original estimates
  • To keep the plan up to date with progress and reduced remaining efforts, run a "plan > update from date" on a regular basis
