How to edit Estimate when creating or editing tasks?

Philip O'Gorman January 24, 2018

When we create or edit a task the estimate field is not there. The only place we can add or edit the estimate field is from the backlog view. How can we add the estimate field when creating or editing a task?

Atlassian has implemented the agile thought in its product as close as possible to the theory. This means when creating a story, there is no need to estimate it in the moment of creation, because this step happens by the Product Owner (when following the rules of Scrum) before any planning meeting happens. As soon as the backlog has a good quality to present it to the team, they will estimate the issues, not before.

Editing the Estimate Field during a sprint is also not recommended. The team already committed to a specific amount of stories and estimated them. Even if the estimation seems to be wrong - this doeesn't matter. Important is to focus on the sprint goal.

If there went something wrong with a story (e.g. incomplete requirements -> wrong estimation) then its part of the retrospective to talk about the reasons and find a solution not to make this error again.

If you now say, "ok - understood, but I still want to edit the estimate when I think it is the right moment" then read further:

The Estimate Field (known as Story Points) is a custom field introduced long time ago when the agile part of Jira was still a 3rd party plugin. You can add this field to any screen your wish and then edit it whenever you want. But only in the classic Jira fullscreen issue view or during the classic Jira create procedure (not within the agile board).
