How to change the name of a status in workflow?

Everytime when I want to change a status name in workflow，the method I do is delete old status，then I create a new status ，then I put the new status to workflow。Could I directly modify the old status name to a new name?

Yes, you can. Edit the Status and put in the new name. Which version of JIRA are you using?
