How to apply the default value when issue is created through a remote system?

We create stories and bugs through SFDC. The default values of fields are not being applied when the issue is created.

They are custom fields, which let you set a default value. When I create the issue in JIRA, the defaults work. When I create the issue through SFDC, the defaults are not applied.

How do you put default values in your fields? Through a post-function? Has it ever worked before? Note that fields won't be displayed in a JIRA ticket if they have no value at all. Also, that field should be in the "View Screen" in order for it to be displayed if it indeed has a value.
