How to Upgrade from Jira 3 to Jira-5

Markus Böhler May 21, 2012

Hi,

we like to upgrade to Jira 5. we have an licencekey for version 3. can we use this key for the upgrade procedure or must we have a new key.

we want first test the new version in a testing environment and when the installation works and we proved the new features. We want to install the new version on base of the free trial version.

Thanks for answer

Create a new evaluation license and use that to test your upgrade.

To do this

create a test instance of the same version you are using in live/production update the trial/evaluation license on that instance this will allow you to evaluvate your data in JIRA 5 otherwise for some reason i'm thinking the upgrade process will fail because of license issues.

once you have update the license and export your data and then import it on to a JIRA 5 intance

Check to see all the plugins/customisation OR code modifications you have done in the past are ported over.

If your license is still paid up, you can use a "developer license" too - you'll need to nip into your Atlassian account, look for the license and "upgrade" it (the format changes between 3 and 4), then click on the developer license. The only differences between a dev license and your real one is that the developer license makes Jira print extra "not for production" warnings, and it completely stops working on the expiry date. All the rest of the functionality will be the same as you can expect from a real license.
