How much of JIRA's performance will be based on the database?

And how can I tell.

JIRA for us is not slow now, but I'm wondering if I could get better performance by upgrading from Postgresql 8.4 to whatever the latest version is.

I think JIRA's Profilling (https://confluence.atlassian.com/x/UQISCw) does profile the request and response (but no the DB itself) to the DB too. You can turn it on and setup a mirror environment with the upgraded database and see if there is a difference.
