How does the Enlarge Your Excel Export add-on increase exports?

I am curious as to how the Enlarge Your Excel Export add-on actually increases exports or more importantly how does it affect performance?

The articles I have read on the subject talk about a configuration change that can be made, but is also not a recommended change unless you have a fairly beefy server, so curious as to how this add-on affects performance?

Also, what are the recommended minimum server requirements to support the add-on?
