How does JIRA Service Desk number its incident records?

toddparson December 16, 2016

We do not currently use JIRA Service Desk but we are getting ready to develop some system integrations for our future ITSM solution.  To help plan for that future integration, I'm curious how does JIRA Service Desk number its incident, request and change records?  For example, I think the ServiceNow default is inc1234567 for an incident record number.  What is the default for JIRA Service Desk?

Hi Todd Parson

In line with all JIRA versions the approach is the project key followed by a sequential number.

For example.

ABC-15

would be the fifteenth item created in the project with key ABC.

Service Desk is a layer of functions over JIRA, so it uses the JIRA issue numbers.  These are numerics, sequentially generated and take the format <project-key>-id.   Each project starts at 1 and simply counts up.
