Hi Dion, currently the best way is either to adjust manually, or to avoid having to make too many adjustments, by having forward-looking planning mostly in Portfolio, and "push" it to the project quite late when you get to the next sprint.
That said, this is one of the reasons we're currently working on what we call Live Plans, which feature are more direct/dynamic integration with JIRA Software - they are still in labs at this point, but it's worth checking them out early and see if they already have all the capabilities you need on top of the new integration model: http://blogs.atlassian.com/2016/02/real-time-planning-live-plans-portfolio-for-jira/
