How can enter a link in Jira to a document on an external fileshare?

Our JIRA is hosted on an external server and we wish to create a link to documents on our internal fileshare such that they are  not stored within JIRA

Is this possible?

You can put the URL in a text field. However, if you block traffic from the outside clicking on the URL won't open the document.

There's also the issue that JIRA is not really going to be aware of the file - it's a link. If the file is moved, updated or deleted, JIRA won't know that.
