Jira setup has an installer that knows how to upgrade jira (stopping the service, doing backup,...) but one of the problems is that the installer will start jira in the end without allowing you to reaply essential customizations, like web.xml, server.xml, JRE certificates.

Is there any secret command line parameter that we can use to disable the startup up jira at the end of the install?

Jira startup time is >10 minutes, by having to stop the process and restart it it will double the downtime of the system.

Note: it seems that Jira installer is packed with install4j: using http://resources.ej-technologies.com/install4j/help/doc/indexRedirect.html?http&&&resources.ej-technologies.com/install4j/help/doc/helptopics/installers/options.html -- still the service start cancellation seems to be something that has to be implemented by atlassian.

Also, It would be great if we could provide a list of files that would not be override by the installer.

one other possibility would be to not use the installers, but use the zip or tar.gz version.

It's not quite as streamlined as the installer option, but does offer a much greater degree of control. Not a full fix for the imporvement request, but just a thought.
