How can I migrate issues from a Jira Instance to another?

charly braun October 8, 2024

I want to migrate groups of issues (5-500 issues at a time) from one jira instance to another jira instance without migrating the whole project since the two instances have different structures.

Besides the usual fields i need the following information: comments in the actual sequence, change history, attachments, related to links, mentioned in links (starting from confluence).

And I need to adjust some of the fields before importing to the new instance (e.g. Status, assignee, add a comment).

How can I perform this migration?

Hi @charly braun ,

Welcome to Atlassian Community!

In this case, you can perform the migration using CSV Export / Import.

You only export the tickets that you need to migrate. Of course, this way has its limitations.

Kind Regards

Pavel

Hey Pavel,

thank you for your answer!

I already tried exporting the data via CSV but it is not possible to get change history, attachments, related to links, etc. through CSV so this is not a (complete) option.

Do you know of any other options?

Yes, these are all constraints that you can't transfer using CSV.
You can try the addon designed for Project / Issues migration, but there you can't select which issues you want to migrate. I don't think there is an ideal solution at the moment.

Hello @charly braun

If I understand correctly, you’re trying to move Jira issues in bulk into another instance, right?

In that case, I can suggest trying our app Elements Copy & Sync. It allows you to clone issues with all their content (summary, description, custom fields, comments, attachments…) to another instance.

Don't hesitate to check the documentation, it’s really quick and easy to set up.

The app is for free during 30 days (and it stays free under 10 users).

Hi @charly braun

If the structure were the same, you could have done this with JCMA.

Alternatively, here are two approaches you can consider:

  • Jira Native CSV Export/Import: You can export the data, manually adjust it in the CSV file to match the new structure. Jira allows exporting 1,000 issues at a time, which should suffice for your use case. The only caveat is that users will need to pause their work during the migration process.
  • Atlassian Solution Partner: Tools like OpsHub Migration Manager (available on the Atlassian Marketplace) can help migrate selected issues. It allows mapping fields between two Jira instances, and migrates comments, attachments, links, and mentions without any downtime.

In case of any questions or want to schedule a free demo, feel free to contact our migration experts.

Hey Prachi,

thank you!

The documentation is about cloud migrations. I am working with two Data Center Versions. Does it function the same?

Hi Charly,

Thank you for your reply :)

This would only work on the cloud. I am unsure on the DC part of it, I would suggest reaching out to our DC support team or our migration team here here: https://support.atlassian.com/contact/#/

They should be able to further guide you with next steps.

Thank You,

Prachi
