Click "Edit Project"
Click "Project Avatar"
Pick another icon or choose from file

Works, don't forget that your product key is the short code for each project!

I had so hard time to get this done  for the first time but it is really easy.

  1. Click on the gear setting icon next to profile pic icon (right top corner)
  2. Click on the Projects
  3. Click "Edit" next to the project  and under Operation column
  4. click on the select image in Project Avatar

DONE smile

As of April 2020, in the cloud version, click on the Jira logo in the upper left, then click on Projects.  Find your project on the right and click on the ellipsis and select Project Settings.  Once you've gotten that far you'll see the Avatar in the middle of the page with a "select image" button.
