How can I automatically transition issues in Jira Next Gen after a BitBucket branch changes

With classic Jira, we have set up triggers so that whenever a branch is created, the JIRA task goes into in progress, then when the PR is merged, it closes.

Is there another way of doing this that doesn't require the user to add Smart Commit #transition-name ?

Is this coming to Next Gen projects?

Currently it is not possible to use triggers in a next-gen project to transition an issue based on Bitbucket actions. There is a request to have this added, JSWCLOUD-17721, go and vote on it if you want to see it implemented.
