Formatting a Custom Field

Is there any way to format the description field of a custom field?

I would like to use bullet points and bold, but when I copy and past my description into JIRA it reverts it to normal txt and takes out my bullet spacing.  

I'm using JIRA v6.3.15

Hey Angela,

                     You can insert HTML/Javascript under description of custom field. Make sure you close the tags.
