Filter by Components

If I create an Epic, and put select component X on that, and then put stories into the epic, can I then create a filter that says project in "Project Name" and component = X, and I will get all stories that are in the epic?  Or do I have to select the component for every single story, and subtask in the story?

You can filter issues based on the component set on an Epic, if you have a plugin like JQL Tricks. With the default functionality, you won't be able to do it. In that case, you need to set the components on all the issues.
