'External user management = ON' but EDIT and CHANGE PWD still possible

We use CROWD as user directory and set the JIRA property 'External user management' to ON. Users are still able to edit their profile or to press the 'Change Password' link. When clicked they see an Application credentials error.

This is not what I expected. What am I overlooking?

Hi, there's an open issue here https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JRA-27280. Please vote for it. Atlassian has made an explanation on why it's still available. It's a known issue right now.

Thanks Harry Chan. You are right but it makes no sense to me. They added intelligence to auto enabled/disable the EDIT functionality, based on read or read/write permissions of the user directory. This clearly does not work yet as our Crowd is Read only and still enables editing of profiles.

EDIT: Seems I was incorrect, our CROWD directory was configured in JIRA as READ/WRITE. Setting it to READ resolved the issue. Imo the setting 'External User management" has become obsolete

I agree and hence, please vote for the bug as well.

Can you check if JIRA is set as public or private? Set the Mode to "Private" under Administration > General Configuration.
