Does Portfolio have a separate database from Jira?

The instructions say to import the issues, which implies that, but it seems puzzling.

How do you keep JIRA and Portfolio in sych? See progress on projects in Portfolio while planning?

Sort of, yes. It is a not a separate database but the data is not in JIRA as "issues".
